Top Bitcoin Movies Every Crypto Enthusiast Should Watch

by Matthew Harris

Hello, my name is Matthew and I’m a movie-holic. My Movie’s Anywhere account has over 160 titles and I probably have at least that many physical copies. Albeit some are indeed duplicates as I upgraded to HD digital versions, the point is… I watch a lot of movies.

As I also happen to do a decent bit of reading, reviewing, editing, and of course writing, about the cryptocurrency world, I naturally wondered if there were any movies that are crypto-related.

While I haven’t had a chance to watch all of these yet, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how many options are available and thought there might be a few of you out there that’d be interested in seeing some of them as well, so I thought I’d share.

Of Course There’s Plenty of Movies About Bitcoin

It should come as no surprise that the number one crypto has a few movies it can add to its resume. From movies, documentaries, and docudramas, let’s take a look at a couple you might want to check out.

The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin
Available for free to Amazon Prime members, this documentary focuses on Dan, a computer programmer that becomes fascinated with Bitcoin. Along his journey, they take a look at early development, startups of the time (circa 2014), the mining market and various aspects of the one that started it all.

Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It
Another free documentary for Prime members, but this one offers a look at the history of money itself — from the barter systems of ancient societies to cryptocurrencies and everything in-between. Additionally, it also takes a close look at fiat currency and does a really good job of explaining their inherent fallibilities and fallacies. Definitely looks like this one should be added to the list of anyone interested in learning more about the worldwide importance of cryptocurrencies.

Banking on Bitcoin
This is yet another one that Amazon Prime members can check out for free and is more of a traditional documentary. “Banking on Bitcoin” also takes a closer look at regulation attempts and and the people that are working to define the crypto and the industry.

Bitcoin Heist
One for Netflix users that I am definitely going to check out. It comes from Vietnam and has subtitles but from everything I’ve read, it’s worth a watch. This digital-age heist movie resorts to an all-too-familiar plot of using criminals to catch a criminal (the “world’s most wanted criminal” at that), but the reviews around the web-sphere are generally all positive. I’m an action fan of course and I have NO doubt that I’ve watched movies that are both less entertaining, and lower budgeted.

Magic Money: The Bitcoin Revolution
Another freebie on Prime, but this documentary focuses on the origins of the original crypto. Additionally, it attempts to take a closer look at the impact on society and what it could mean for our future.

Crypto-Related Movies

A few other titles you may want to check out are:

  • Dope — An award winning indie-film that, as its name implies, focuses on drug dealing, but it does indeed include some utilization of Bitcoin as a way to launder the funds. While the reviews I read were mixed, the majority seemed to think this was worth a watch and although it may not contain much reference to crypto, I thought it may be worth a watch.
  • Deep Web — A documentary that spends a little time exploring cryptocurrency in a sense, but its main focus is on Silk Road, the investigation by law enforcement, and the trial of alleged founder and operator, Ross Ulbricht. Available to rent on Amazon Prime.
  • The Blockchain and Us — Is one I am going to definitely check out myself. It’s available for free to Prime members and does something I’ve personally been doing over the past few weeks (just click my name and look at prior articles to check out some of my articles on blockchain) — takes a broader look at the potential wider implications of the technology. A subject I am very interested in.

Honorable Mention

While it’s not a movie, “Silicon Valley” is an HBO series that is both available on Prime and comes with some really good reviews (avg. 8.5/10 on IMDB). It’s co-created by none other than Mike Judge, the genius behind classics such as Office Space, King of the Hill, and Beavis and Butt-Head, and focuses on a Silicon Valley startup. Additionally, they apparently have an ICO and get rich and go broke overnight, so for a laugh it may be worth checking out.

One to Skip

Of course the mainstream “entertainment” industry would get their first attempt all wrong, (see the very, very first Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hulk 1 & 2 for a few lessons the industry and Marvel learned) and with “Crypto,” featuring none other than Kurt Russell on the cover yet has him listed waaaaaaay down the credits list, sounds like they’re staying true to par. Reviews are calling out the movie as an attempt at using “Crypto” just to gain attention as it has very little to do with the industry at all.

Okay, that’s all I came across in my search so far but if you’ve got a favorite that I should add to the list, be sure to comment below so everyone can check it out.
