If you’ve spent anytime around Bitcoin, there’s probably several questions that have crossed your mind. What was the most Bitcoin ever spent on one purchase? Who lost the most profit by selling too early or too late? How much is inaccessible due to lost wallets? What are the richest wallets?
You’ve probably even looked up several of those exact phrases but just in case you haven’t, here are a few facts:
It’s estimated that at least one-fifth of Bitcoin is permanently lost, Chainalysis estimates that between 2.78 and 3.79 million, or between 17 and 23%, of all Bitcoins have been lost. An IT worker in London named James Howells is one of the most famous cases of a lost fortune in Bitcoin. His laptop was thrown away in 2013 and along with it, his wallet info that held 7,500 BTC, worth over $61M in today’s market.
The most spent on one purchase as well as who lost the most profit by selling too early can both be convincingly argued to be awarded to one man and one purchase — Laszlo Hanyecz’s 2010 purchase of two large Papa John’s pizzas. While at the time his 10,000 Bitcoin purchase was only valued at $30, that’s over $81M with today’s value.
Of course there are all kinds of fun facts about Bitcoin and I could go on all day with little tidbits of at least somewhat interesting information, but today we wanted to take a much closer look at one aspect in particular.
The richest wallets.
So, since we rarely do anything small here at CTN, we dug up the 100 wallets with the fattest Bitcoin stashes.

The top 10 wallets hold 963,052 BTC, a value of almost $8B as of this writing. I was going to add them all up but then I figured, why should I have all the fun?
We should also note that we didn’t investigate to see whether these wallets are currently actively trading or may be lost or hibernating, so you might have some fun with that as well.
And of course, should you happen to be the owner of one of those wallets listed above, especially one of those top 10, Christmas is around the corner and I do accept BTC!
